Ocean Literacy through Sociocultural Education
Escuna Criativa is an international organisation dedicated to ocean literacy. We utilise arts and culture to translate political and scientific research into citizen education, to foster a deeper connection between humanity and the waters of our planet.
What is Ocean Literacy?
Ocean Literacy is the understanding of the ocean’s influence on people and our influence on the ocean. It helps people recognize the importance of the ocean for climate, biodiversity, food, and human well-being. Ocean Literacy also encourages responsible actions and informed decisions to protect marine ecosystems and promote a sustainable future.
What is the imporance of Ocean Literacy for the EU Ocean Pact?
The EU Ocean Pact is a European initiative that brings together policies and actions to protect and restore ocean health, support a sustainable blue economy, and strengthen cooperation between governments, scientists, businesses, and citizens for a resilient future.
Ocean Literacy is an important part of the EU Ocean Pact because it helps people understand the ocean’s vital role in everyday life and the impact human activities have on marine ecosystems. By increasing knowledge, awareness, and public engagement, Ocean Literacy encourages responsible behavior and supports informed decision-making. This empowers citizens and communities to actively contribute to the goals of the EU Ocean Pact and to the sustainable protection of the ocean.

Ocean Decade Challenges:
The Ocean Decade Challenges set out the most critical priorities for action within the Ocean Decade, guiding global efforts to protect and sustainably manage the ocean, under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
We actively contribute to this global mission by focussing on education, citizen science and Ocean Literacy.

Challenge 9:
Skills, knowledge, technology and participation for all
At ESCUNA Criativa, ocean literacy means understanding the deep connection between people and the ocean and recognizing how our actions afect its future. Inspired by UNESCO-IOC, we promote awareness of the ocean as a vital system connected to climate, culture, health, and livelihoods. Through creative learning, artistic expression, and community engagement, we encourage a holistic “source-to-sea” perspective that empowers individuals and communities to protect and sustain marine ecosystems for future generations.

Challenge 10:
Restore society’s relationship with the ocean
We have established a focus on these UN sustainable development goals:

GENDER EQUALITY
SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
